ULTIMATE AIR DOGS , one of the premier dock jumping organizations in the country, puts on professional events that draw in thousands of spectators while maintaining a family friendly atmosphere. Our shows become the feature of every festival or show that we do! We started as a grassroots Michigan dock jumping club, striving to make every single participant feel important, from the smallest Novice jumper to the biggest Ultimate high flyer! That is why we created the Divisional Finals where the top 5 dogs from each division are invited to compete in a Grand Finale! Another way that we put the dog first, is by providing more open dock time than any other organization. Whenever possible our participants will be able to practice. If dogs are having difficulty learning, our crew of volunteers will often provide free help between activities. Every Ultimate Air Dog is equally special. All mixes and breeds are welcome! Ultimate Air Dogs has partnered with Purina to round up participants for the Purina Incredible Dog Challenge as seen on CBS's "The Late Show with David Letterman" Purina has been a long time sponsor of Ultimate Air Dogs and our mascot, “Sparky” Wilcox.
Many people come to our events just to meet our president and main announcer, Milt Wilcox, the former Detroit Tiger pitcher famous for winning the 1984 World Series! Milt and Sparky have been seen on ABC’s “Good Morning America” and ESPN’s “Cold Pizza” along with competing in many of their “Great Outdoor Games.”
DEMOs Demonstrations are free shows that are open to all dogs, unless otherwise noted on the event schedule. They are not judged or scored. They do not count towards legs and titles. Participating in a Demo is a great way to get experience on the dock in front of an audience for both you and your dog!
SPLASH Long distance jumping is the main feature of our events. It is showcased in different rounds called “Splashes” that culminate at the end of the event with our Divisional Finals. Dogs run down a dock and fly into a pool, with the distance judged from the end of the dock to the base of the dog’s tail. Each competitor gets two jumps per Splash, with the bigger of the two jumps counting as their score. A dog’s score is placed into a division according to the distance, and the various divisions are described in the chart on this page. Dog and handler teams also earn annual titles on the Ultimate Air Dogs database by participating in a Splash or making it into the Finals.
ULTIMATE VERTICAL Ultimate Vertical is a fast growing, exhilarating sport that is becoming a crowd favorite. Spawned from a way to train dogs to achieve more distance, it is the height event as opposed to distance. An apparatus hangs a training bumper 8 feet out over the pool, after the height is measured from the dock to the bumper. Dogs must release the bumper for the jump to count, by either grabbing it by mouth or knocking it clean off. Dogs get 2 shots at each height, and the bumper is moved up, usually in 2-inch increments. The competition proceeds until only one dog is still getting the bumper! Because Ultimate Vertical requires far more exertion than long jumping in a Splash, taking so much more out of a dog, we usually incorporate only one round per event plus the UV Finals. In order to include newer, just learning dogs, we have instituted a Novice Division in this sport as well. These are determined by heights lower than six feet. CATCH IT! is a new twist on the Ultimate Distance game invented by our founder Milt Wilcox and only at Ultimate Air Dogs!!! It runs the same way as a Splash, where two jumps for each dog are judged by distance. However, the dog MUST catch the object thrown for the jump to count. And, as opposed to Long Distance jumping where only the best jump is the score, both jumps will count IF and ONLY IF the object is caught on each jump. Then, the jump distances are added together for the score. Not only is it an added challenge for the dog to catch the throw object while in mid-air, it also requires added thought and strategy from the handler.
Catch It should shape up to be another exciting addition and crowd favorite at Ultimate Air Dog events!
DIVISIONAL FINALS Ultimate Air Dogs in the home of the Divisional Finals. We created these as a way to celebrate the smaller jumping dogs, too! We believe that the Novice Jumpers are just as special as the Ultimate Jumpers! Our primary focus is on each dog being the best that he or she can be, while just having a plain old, good time! Here's how the Divisional Finals work. At the end of the last Splash of the weekend, the Event Secretary will compile the scores, taking each dog's one best jump of the entire event. If your dog competed in one or all of the Splashes, still only their best jump counts towards qualifying. Then, the Top 5 Dogs from each of the Divisions will then be invited to participate in a Finals at no cost to them. They will earn one leg for their best jump in the Finals. The Divisions may be seen below.
